Technology's (Society's ?) fatal flaw

"Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should." - Dr. Ian Malcolm, Jurassic Park

Your personal information is only a "Google" away. Try it. Go to Google. Enter your name and the initials of your state. Anything return that you recognize? I found a phonebook entry complete with full name (including middle initial), street address, state, zip, and phone number (including area code). Funny I don't remember ever telling them it was okay. All over the news we hear about identity theft. Citibank has a whole promotional campaign around it. Well, to whom it may concern:

"I COULD DO A LOT BETTER JOB PROTECTING MYSELF IF YOU DIDN'T GO AND MAKE ALL MY PERSONAL INFORMATION SO EASY TO FIND!"

And of course there is the bigger picture here. Almost nobody ever thinks to ask "Should I?" anymore. Maybe if they did we wouldn't have a lot of the issues we have today. Are we really better off than we were in the 70's and 80's?
