Pride, it's not a sin

Personally I think when the seven deadly sins were translated into English, someone took a little license and used the word pride where perhaps the intent was something more like arrogance or vanity. The word pride seems to get a bad rap.

What's my point? Don't feel bad about being proud of yourself if you've earned that right. I know it's tough to do. Really, I know. As a coach and co-worker I've long been regarded as being tough on those I instruct. Be that as it may, I've always been far more harsh on myself than others. Even in my most successful moments, I've been able to find fault with what I've done.

Well, I'm getting older and trying to be wiser. Today I ran the Boston Marathon; the first time in six years and the fourth overall. I've run as fast as 3:04 and as slow as 3:12 . Today, I ran a 3:09:26 . So how did I do? On the one hand it was my second slowest time. On the other I ran my fastest second 1/2 by far, more than 2 minutes faster than the second 1/2 in 1998 when I ran my 3:04 .

Well, I think I'm going to give myself a good grade today. The deciding factor is my pacing. Below are my 5K splits:
Checkpoints 5k 10k 15k 20k 25k 30k 35k 40k Finish Time

0:22:38 0:44:53 1:07:01 1:29:27 1:51:39 2:14:28 2:37:10 2:59:33 3:09:26

Here's 1998:

It was a pretty tough day today with almost no shade to be found. My legs were a little sore from racing on Saturday and doing hill repeats on my bike on Thursday (not excuses). Leanna and Alexandra were alone in downtown Boston. Daddy was a little stressed. And as the numbers show, I cranked out an extremely methodical marathon.

Yes, it was a good day.

Yes, I think I've earned the right to be proud. That doesn't make me a bad person, does it?
